National Puppy Day

March 23rd is National Puppy Day! We don’t have to tell you that puppies are one of the cutest things on the planet. That first year is a very important one, however. In order to get your puppy started on the right paw in life, you’ll have quite a bit of pet parenting to do. A local Arlington Heights, TX vet offers some puppy care tips below.

Good nutrition is always important, but it’s particularly crucial when Fido is little. Dogs grow very fast, so nutritional imbalances at this stage can contribute to a variety of health problems later on. Offer your canine buddy a premium brand of puppy food. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Little Fido has lots to learn about the do’s and don’ts of being a good dog. Start teaching your furry pal important commands, like Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down, right away. Housebreaking and crate training are also important, and can both be done along with obedience training.

Puppies are basically four-legged balls of zoom. Make sure Fido has lots of fun toys to play with. You’ll also want to make sure the little guy has plenty of suitable chew toys. This will help him alleviate the pain of teething.

Just like people, dogs need regular activity to stay healthy. While you don’t want to overexert your canine buddy, you do want to make sure he’s getting enough exercise, even if it’s just a daily walk. Follow your vet’s recommendations.

Socialization is very important to your furry friend’s mental and emotional development. Exposing your puppy to new faces and places can help teach him that the world is a fun place. This will help him grow up into a friendly, trusting adult dog. Ask your vet for advice.

Veterinary Care

Little Fido will need to come in a few times during that crucial first year. We recommend that all dogs be microchipped, spayed or neutered, and kept current on parasite control, exams, and vaccinations.

Tail Wags

Make sure that little Fido feels loved and safe by paying lots of attention to him, and spending time with him daily. Remember to take photos: this adorable stage will pass all too quickly!
